Independence Dam State Park

Located approximately 3 miles east of Downtown Defiance on old St. Rt. 424, the park offers recreational opportunities including boating access, biking trails, fishing, scenic drives, Frisbee Golf, picnic areas and Volleyball courts. A hiking trail, once the towpath for the Miami/Wabash/Erie Canal meanders between the old canal and the river for a distance of three miles. Enjoy this natural beauty in any season.

Confluence of the Maumee and AuGlaize Rivers

Spend an afternoon enjoying the natural and historical attractions at the confluence. Walk along the scenic river bank and over the fort grounds, taking time to read the monuments that mark history of General Anthony Wayne, Fort Defiance, Fort Winchester and the Indians that inhabited the land before us. All three banks of the confluence provide activity. Pontiac Park to the North includes the historic French Apple tree and a boat launch, Kingsbury Park to the east holds little league ball parks, the community swimming pool and a shady playground. While visiting be sure to stop in and check out our beautiful Carnegie Library nestled within the banks of this historic area.

AuGlaize Village

Maintained by the Defiance County Historical Society, this village opened in June of 1966. Visitors become uniquely involved in the recreation of the history of the 19th century. Along with its 41 new, restored and reconstructed buildings, the village houses several museums. Each year the museum is open on special event days where authentically costumed craftsman demonstrate a wide variety of pioneer skills Points of interest include the military museum, antique farm machinery displays and a train museum.

Defiance County Fair: Fairgrounds
The fairgrounds host events throughout the year for Defiance County. Most noted of the events is the yearly Defiance County Fair that takes place the third week of August.

Kingsbury Park
A centrally located park on the east side of the city provides a beautiful view of the Maumee and Auglaize Rivers. Enjoy 6 covered shelter houses, playground equipment, 2 baseball diamonds, 3 tennis courts and a basketball court. Children of all ages will love the water slide at Kingsbury Pool and Wading Pool located next to the park.

Located on the northwest side of the city, with two large covered shelter houses, basketball courts and four baseball diamonds, it is sure to keep the sports minded occupied. The biggest attraction is the Kid's Creation Playground.

Pontiac Park
A beautiful park situated beside the Maumee River on East River Drive. This park also has a splendid view of the confluence of the Maumee and Auglaize Rivers. This park also has boating access. It is the site of the Old French Indian Apple Tree marker and the possible birthplace of the Ottawa Indian Chief Pontiac.

Maumee State Forest and Mary Jane Thurston State Park

Two distinct outdoor destinations for those looking to "get back to nature". Henry County is blessed to have two distinct natural areas. Maumee State Forest is part of the larger Oak Openings Region that The Nature Conservancy has named one of "America's Last Great Places". The forest hosts many rare plant and animal species and rare habitats left over after the Ice Age. Mary Jane Thurston takes advantage of the Maumee River that winds through Henry County. County of Henry: Courthouse
This Crown Jewel was built in the 1800's, and is a local architechtural marvel showing off the earlier history of Henry County. Learn the story of the third County Courthouse.

Mary Jane Thurston - North Turkeyfoot Area
Hike in the pristine riverfront wilderness at this State Park. See the woods and river as our ancestors did! This area starts at the intersection of Route 24 and Route 109, and extends East nearly all the way to the Village of Texas along the Canal Towpath.

Florida Village Trail Head/Canoe launch
Park here for access to the Buckeye/North Country Trail. Also a great canoe or paddlesport launch into the Maumee River. This area is located on the North side of the River at the foot of the River Bridge. Florida Village is a historic Canal Village. It is situated on the former site named "Snaketown"...after an Indian Chief named "Snake"!

North Country Trail / Buckeye Trail
Hike or Bicycle Along the Old Canal Tow Path in Henry County. The Miami Erie Canal Towpath winds around 20 miles through Henry County. It is part of the North Country Trail/ Buckeye Trail. Visit:

The Independence leg of the trail goes from Independence Dam to the Village of Florida. Through the Dam, the Trail is asphalt, then becomes cleared ground into Florida.

Historic Precht Bridge
